Traitor Librarian project: the final

The Traitor-Librarian project is finally over and went yesterday to a new home. This project took considerably more time than I had originally planned and was one of those rare works that I would gladly leave in my collection. While working on this miniature, I came up with several interesting ideas that I will definitely try to realize when I make such an uncle for myself.
I hope you were also interested in watching the process and liked the result.

Traitor Librarian part 5: Burn Fire Burn!

The last part of the Traitor-Librarian project log will be devoted to the fire demon and glow effects.

The first thing that I would like to note is that the fire and all sorts of similar effects are better drawn on a light undercoat. Because I primed miniature with black, I need to do a layer of the light undercoat. I used Khaki (VGC), but in principle, any extra opaque light colors would work.

Usually, I paint from dark to light, and it can be difficult for me to change to another method of painting. So I chose a compromise option: first cover everything among the middle color, and then go both ways. As an basic middle color, I chose Scrofulous Brown (VGC).

It should be noted that painting a flame is a rare case when I do not make a color transition, but paint with pure colors or individual mixtures of them.
For the highlight of the base color, I used Dark Tangerine and Yellow from Pacific88 and Ice Yellow (VMC)
For darkening - Scarlet (VMC), Flat Red (Andrea) and a mixture of Flat Red and black.
The tips of the horns and  flames on the demon's head are painted purely black, also I put some dot of pure Ice Blue to simulate sparks.

To do some reflexes from fire, I used Scarlet and Flat Red, adding, if necessary, Dark Tangerine.

Traitor Librarian part 4: Reds

Since I have repeatedly written about working with reds in previous projects, I'll just describe the used colors and techniques. On this model I used two variants of red, warm on a cloak and a tabard and a cold red-magenta on a book and a staff.

Traitor Librarian part 3; NMM

Since in the previous project (https://ravenswood-art.blogspot.ru/2018/04/praetor-tribune-project-final.html) the part with the HMM was fairly well disclosed, I will only allow myself to describe the changes in the recipes regarding the previous variants.

The main change in the steel HMM (https://ravenswood-art.blogspot.ru/2018/04/praetor-tribune-project-part-4-eng.html) was the refusal to use my beloved German Cam. Black Brown from Vallejo due to the poor quality of this paint. Alas, the last two pots purchased were not good enough for use and I had to look for a replacement. As a replacement, I used a very dark mixture of Reddish Brown from Pacific88 and black. All other colors remained unchanged.

In the bronze NMM (https://ravenswood-art.blogspot.ru/2018/04/praetor-tribune-project-part-5-bronze.html), I replaced the Dark Red-Brown with Flash shade 2 (both Pacific88), and also reduced the saturation of orange color in reflexes and additional lights, in comparison with the previous variants. Also I added a little purple in the shade (here and further Hexed Lichen).

Orange bronze (on the back) has not changed since the original version. (http://serpentarium-painting.blogspot.ru/2018/02/eng.html)

Gold.

I divided the staff into three parts: I made the upper part lighter and yellow, the middle part - less yellow and more contrast, the lower one - more brown, with violet shadows and the most contrasting.

As a undercoat, I used the Reddish Browns (Pacific88 Art Color), mixing it and Scrofulous Brown (Vallejo Game Color) for the base shade. Next, I highlighted it, first adding a little Scrofulous Brown, and then to a pure Gold Brown (Vallejo Model Color). In the last stages, a bit of Yellow (Pacific88 Art Color) was added to Gold Brown, after which this mixture was highlighted by Pearl White (Pacific88 Art Color). The glare is set to pure Pearl White, then with the help of Scrofulous Brown, I removed the excess yellowness where I did not need it.

In this recipe, Pearl White can be replaced with Ice Yellow (Vallejo Model Color) and Yellow with Sol Yellow (Scalecolor).

Traitor Librarian project, part 2 - the Base

This part of the project log will cover painting the base. I was going to make it a bit darker than previous versions, so that the glow from the flame, which I will do later, looked more convincing. Since I have not yet decided what color this flame will be, then I will draw reflexes closer to the end of the project.

Traitor Librarian project, part 1

I started a new project log, dedicated to painting a miniature "Traitor Librarian in Cataphractii Terminator Armor" from ForgeWorld stitched by magnificent Tom Hugues. This model also needed to be painted in the colors of the Legion of Iron Warriors.
